For a long time, water activities have been some of the most challenging environments for trans and nonbinary people. The combination of less clothing, public exposure, and swimwear that doesn't account for gender expression makes the beach, the pool, and open water feel inaccessible for many people who just want to swim.
Swim binders exist to change that. This guide covers everything you need to know — what swim binders are, how they work, how they compare to everyday binders, which style suits different bodies and needs, and how to care for them so they last.
A swim binder is a compression garment designed specifically for wearing in water. Like a regular chest binder, it works to flatten the chest and create a more masculine silhouette — but unlike everyday binders, it's made from fabrics built specifically for aquatic environments.
That means quick-dry stretch fabrics that stay lightweight and flexible when wet, move with your body during active swimming, and maintain their compression whether you're doing laps at the pool, catching waves, or just floating in the ocean.
The level of compression is intentionally moderate rather than maximum. In water, it's important to be able to breathe freely and move without restriction — swim binders are designed to balance a flatter chest appearance with safe, comfortable movement in the water.
This is the most common question we hear, and the answer matters for both comfort and safety.
Why you can't just wear a regular binder to swim?
Everyday chest binders are designed for dry environments. When they get wet they become significantly heavier — the compression fabric absorbs water and loses its flexibility, making it harder to breathe and move freely. In open water this isn't just uncomfortable, it can be genuinely unsafe.
Regular binders also take a very long time to dry, and repeated exposure to chlorine or saltwater degrades the fabric much faster than it was designed to handle.
Swim binders use swimwear-grade compression fabrics — typically a nylon/elastane blend similar to performance swimwear. These fabrics:
Transform swim binders also follow the same panel-free design principle as all of our binders — no rigid internal panels means your ribcage can expand naturally while you swim.
We offer two swim binder styles, designed for different body types and preferences:
The Swim Binder Crop sits at the midriff for a more minimal silhouette — a great option for people who want a streamlined look in the water. Made from 86% Nylon + 14% Elastane. Available in Moss Green and Steel Blue, sizes XXS to 5XL.
The Swim Binder Tank sits at the hip for fuller coverage and a more relaxed, sporty look. Great on its own or layered under a swim shirt for additional sun protection and coverage. Same quick-dry nylon/elastane fabric. Available in Moss Green and Steel Blue, sizes XXS to 5XL.
Choose the Crop if you prefer a shorter length and a more minimal look. Choose the Tank if you want more coverage, a relaxed sporty fit, or plan to swim in open water where fuller coverage feels more comfortable. Both provide the same level of chest compression and are made from the same quick-dry fabric.
That said, for those with a lot of chest tissue, we always recommend a tank style binder, as more surface area provides more room for the tissue to be dispersed.

Getting the right size is the most important factor for both comfort and effective compression. You need two measurements:
Compare these to the size chart on the product page. If you fall between sizes, go up a size — a swim binder that is too small can restrict breathing in the water, which is both uncomfortable and unsafe.
Our swim binders come in 10 sizes from XXS to 5XL, with detailed size guidance on each product page.

Swim binders are designed to perform across a range of water-based activities, not just laps in a pool:
Our swim binders are built for active swimming. The compression fabric stays secure and flexible whether you're swimming laps in a chlorinated pool or moving through open water. The tank style in particular is popular for open water swimming where fuller coverage provides an extra sense of security.
Australian summers mean beach days — and swim binders are designed for exactly this. Salt water, UV exposure, sand and sun are all part of the picture. Rinse your swim binder in cold fresh water after each ocean swim to prevent saltwater buildup and extend the life of the fabric.
The quick-dry fabric and secure fit make swim binders practical for active water sports. Pair with a Swim Shirt UPF 50+ for added sun protection and a more covered look while surfing or paddleboarding.
Water parks, backyard pools, rivers and lakes — swim binders work in any aquatic setting. If you're planning a full day in and out of water, the quick-dry fabric means you won't be spending long periods in a wet garment between swims.
Swim binders are one part of a broader trans swimwear range designed for every trans and nonbinary body. The full collection includes:
Quick-dry swim shorts designed for trans men and trans masculine people who want a relaxed, masculine fit in the water. Pair with a swim binder for a complete water-ready look.
A button-up swim shirt with UPF 50+ sun protection and a relaxed masculine fit — practical for beach days, surfing, or anyone who prefers more coverage. Works well over a swim binder.
Our femme swimwear is designed for trans women, trans femme and nonbinary people who want feminine styles that are comfortable and secure in the water. This includes our lightly padded Tankini Swim Top and Swim Skort with built-in shorts — a practical option on days when you don't feel like tucking.

Rigid internal panels restrict breathing and movement in the water. All Transform swim binders are panel-free — the compression comes from the swimwear-grade fabric itself, not from internal structure that fights against your body.
Taking care of your swim binder extends its life significantly and maintains the compression fabric's performance over time.
Swim binders are designed for comfortable, safe swimming — but these guidelines apply whenever you're in the water:
A swim binder is a compression garment designed specifically for wearing in water. It uses quick-dry swimwear-grade fabrics to flatten the chest while staying lightweight and flexible when wet — unlike regular chest binders which are not designed for aquatic environments.
A swimming chest binder is another term for a swim binder — a garment made specifically for wearing in water. Transform's swimming chest binders are made from 86% Nylon and 14% Elastane, available in crop and tank styles.
We don't recommend it. Regular chest binders are not designed for water — they become heavy and restrictive when wet, can take a long time to dry, and repeated exposure to chlorine or saltwater can degrade the fabric quickly. A swim binder is purpose-built for exactly this situation.
Yes — swim binders are designed for active swimming. All Transform swim binders are panel-free, which means your ribcage can expand naturally while you swim. Always ensure your swim binder fits correctly before swimming and remove it if you experience any difficulty breathing.
